Energy comes from fat and a dog needs a daily-recommended amount of fats in the diet. The body uses energy for everything a dog does, without fats to produce enough energy the dog can become lifeless. The fats also play a small role in promoting nutrition absorption and building strong cells. A dog’s body cannot produce any fats be itself; therefore, it has to come from the foods he or she eats.

A dog usually does not suffer from a fatty acids deficiency since the body sustains itself on the other fats in the diet. It is usually enough to supply energy to the body. Small amounts of fats other than the fatty acids does help the dog because it protects the dog from the cold, it adds a little more cushion to the body and forms a protective covering around the vital organs in the body of the dog. Dog have a easier time of turning the fats into energy more so than human does.

Too Much Fat Is Bad?

If the dog eats too much fat, it can become a health concern. If the fats are not burned up in the body they will turn to body fat and store up inside the body resulting in an overweight dog. When the fats are not used for energy, they cause weight gain, which can result in health problems such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and diabetes.

When the body uses the recommended amount of fats for the day, the amount of fats over that amount are stored as fat. The body only needs a certain amount to cushion, cover and protect from the cold. It is possible that for every thirty-five hundred calories a dog eats over what they daily need can produce one pound of fat.

As a dog owner you need to keep in mind that your dog will get fat if they eat more than what they need per day. Anything over their needed intake can and will store in the body and become fat and cause weight gain. It is very important that you watch your dog’s diet to make sure they are getting only the amount of fats they need daily to aid their bodies and not produce fat. With this in mind, your dog should maintain an accurate weight.
