Your adult dog still requires your attention. It is not like a human that grows up and leaves home. Instead, your dog still relies on you for nutrition, exercise and companionship everyday. Just because they are adult dogs does not mean the training is over or that you do not need to understand what they need. The most important aspect of understanding your dog is to realize what training they had as a puppy.
If you raised your dog from a puppy into adulthood then you know there are skills you have taught him. These skills need to be reinforced with continued training. You also need to exercise your dog daily. Depending on the breed a mile or less may be enough, but some dogs really need to have a lot of exercise to feel great and keep them alert.
Your dog is going to be very tuned to your feelings. This means that you have to understand his or her moods as well. In other words your dog can feel unhappy, lonely, happy and a myriad of other emotions. To keep your dog in great health you have to understand these moods and make sure you correct for them.
If you leave your adult dog home all day for several days chances are they are going to feel abandoned and exhibit bad behavior. Rather than punishing the dog, you should understand why they have felt this way, acted out, and then take some sort of action. You do not want to make your dog even more upset by yelling or punishing them.
Contact with Others
Humans need friends, social time, and of course alone time. Your adult dog is going to be the same. Your dog, if a social breed will require time with humans as well as with other dogs or animals. You should take your pet to a dog park to let them interact with others. You can also play with them at least once a day as well as take them for little exercise jaunts. Dogs also want a change in pattern. You can take them to new places for their walks as well as take them to the same dog parks for interaction. It helps them stimulate their mental capacity.
